CineGlobe 2024 - Opening night: Universe in a Grain of Sand
Join us for the premiere of "Universe in a Grain of Sand", an innovative documentary directed by Mark Levinson from 2024.
Synopsis: A meditation by the award-winning filmmaker/physicist Mark Levinson (director of the film Particle Fever) on how we make sense of the world. Juxtaposing scientific developments with the works of artists, the visually rich film explores how both scientists and artists use their understanding of nature to create tools and representations to probe the deepest mysteries of the universe. This art-film crossed with creative documentary takes us on a journey from experimental film to the frontiers of quantum computing.
Mark Levinson is the award-winning director of the documentary feature Particle Fever about the discovery of the Higgs boson. Before embarking on a film career, he earned a PhD in particle physics from UC Berkeley. In the film world he was a specialist in the post-production writing and recording of dialogue, working on over 40 feature films including The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Johnny Mnemonic and The Social Network. He directed the fiction film Prisoner of Time about two former Russian dissident artists after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Most recently he directed The Bit Player about Claude Shannon, “The Father of Information Theory.” Mark won the inaugural Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication.
The screening will be followed by a discussion (in English) with director Mark Levinson and two experimental filmmakers featured in the film: Maria Constanza Ferreira and Erin Espelie.
The first 50 people to register will be invited to an aperitif following the programme, in the presence of the filmmakers, the CineGlobe team, and visiting festival guests.

Synopsis : Une méditation du physicien et cinéaste primé Mark Levinson (réalisateur du film Particle Fever) sur la façon dont nous donnons un sens au monde. Juxtaposant les développements scientifiques et les œuvres d’artistes, ce film visuellement riche explore la façon dont les scientifiques et les artistes utilisent leur compréhension de la nature pour créer des outils et des représentations permettant de sonder les mystères les plus profonds de l’univers. Ce film d’art et d’essai, doublé d’un documentaire créatif, nous fait voyager du cinéma expérimental aux frontières de l’informatique quantique.
Mark Levinson est le réalisateur primé du documentaire Particle Fever sur la découverte du boson de Higgs. Avant de se lancer dans une carrière cinématographique, il a obtenu un doctorat en physique des particules à l’université de Berkeley. Dans le monde du cinéma, il s’est spécialisé dans la postproduction, l’écriture et l’enregistrement des dialogues, travaillant sur plus de 40 longs métrages, dont Le Patient anglais, Le Talentueux M. Ripley, Johnny Mnemonic et The Social Network. Il a réalisé le film de fiction Prisoner of Time sur deux anciens artistes dissidents russes après l’effondrement de l’Union soviétique. Plus récemment, il a réalisé The Bit Player sur Claude Shannon, « le père de la théorie de l’information ». Mark a remporté la première médaille Stephen Hawking pour la communication scientifique.
La projection sera suivie d’une discussion (en anglais) avec le réalisateur Mark Levinson et deux cinéastes expérimentatrices qui figurent dans le film : Maria Constanza Ferreira and Erin Espelie.
Les premières 50 personnes inscrites seront invitées à un apéro suivant le programme, en présence des cinéastes, l’équipe CineGlobe, et les invité.e.s du festival.
